Prof. Parthasarathi's lecture will discuss the effects of colonialism and economic change on South Indian rural environments during the nineteenth century. The environment of South India was transformed significantly during this time period, but these changes have not figured in the accounts of agrarian historians. This lecture explores how the links between agriculture and environment were reshaped, laying the foundation for recurring crises of the countryside.
Sponsored by the Bodas Endowment for South Asian Studies; the Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages Program; and the Department of Environmental Studies.
