Dr. Kira Lawrence D’96, Senior Policy Advisor for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, talks about her professional journey from high school teacher/coach to scientific research assistant to climate scientist and college professor to clean energy policy advisor.
Bio:
Dr. Kira Lawrence is the Senior Policy Advisor for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), working collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams to develop novel energy policy to inform the fossil to clean energy transition in New Jersey. Prior to serving in this role, Dr. Lawrence worked in BPU’s Division of Clean Energy as a Senior Scientist and the environmental lead for the BPU’s offshore wind program as well as briefly serving as the Acting Deputy Director for Offshore Wind. Dr. Lawrence is an earth and environmental scientist with expertise in climate and ocean sciences. She holds an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, Master’s degrees from the University of California Santa Cruz and Brown University and a PhD from Brown University. Prior to her work with the BPU, Dr. Lawrence spent nearly two decades in academia as a Professor at Lafayette College serving as both co-Chair of the Environmental Programs and as Chair of the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.
While at Dartmouth, Kira majored in Earth Sciences and was a member of the Dartmouth Women’s Basketball Team that won Ivy Championships (1994, 1995). She played Ultimate Frisbee while at graduate school at Brown.
